・・福沢諭吉（１８３５～１９０１）・・・・・中津藩出身・藩士福沢百助の次男に生まれる。安政元年（１８５４）蘭学を学ぶため長崎に行き、翌年大阪に赴いて緒方洪庵の適塾に入り、やがて塾頭になる。万延元年（１８６０）木村義毅の従者として咸臨丸で渡米。さらに幕府使節団について、文久２年（１８６２）に渡欧、慶応３年には渡米して、欧米の近代文明に直接に接した。維新後は、慶応義塾の創設や、明六社への参加、「学問ノススメ」・「文明論之概略」の刊行など、明治期を代表する啓蒙思想家として教育と著述・演説などの言論活動に励んだ。
