・町村議会議員選挙以外の選挙での候補者は、立候補にあたってそれぞれ定められた金額またはこれに相当する額面の国債証書を供託しなければならない。これを供託金という。現行の公職選挙法では、供託金の額は衆議院の小選挙区選出議員の選挙では、候補者一人につき３００万円比例代表選出議員の選挙では、名簿搭載者一人につき６００万円。衆議院小選挙区選出議員選挙の場合、得票数の有効投票の１０分の１に達しないとき、供託金は没収される。資金の乏しい少数政党などには厳しすぎるとの批判もあるが、この制度の趣旨は、絶対に当選しないとわかっていて立候補する泡沫候補の乱立など被選挙権の乱用を防ぐことにある。
