・ハイブリッドカー（hybrid car)・・・・・電気モーターとガソリンエンジンを組み合わせるなど、２種類以上の動力源を持つ車のことを指す。方式には大きくパラレル・ハイブリッドとシリーズ・ハイブリッドの二通りがある。トヨタが１９９８年に発売した「プリウス」では、この両者を組み合わせることで、燃費は今までのガソリン自動車の２倍に向上し、CO２の排出量も半分。NOX（窒素酸化物）の排出量も規制値の十分の一のレベルを実現したことで注目された。その後トヨタは２００１年６月に１．５ｔを超えるミニバン４ＷＤ車としては初の「エスティマ・ハイブリッド」を発売したのに続いて０３年７月には同様のシステムを採用した「アルファード・ハイブリッド」を、同年９月には、プリウスの第二世代モデルを発売した。この分野ではホンダも独自の技術によって１９９９年秋に「インサイト」を、２００１年１２月には、「シビック・ハイブリッド」を発売している。また、後れを取っていた日産は０２年９月トヨタと環境技術分野で技術提携することを発表している。
