・自由貿易協定（Free Trade Agreement)
・関税や数量制限といった障害を相手国と相互に撤廃する取り決めのこと。北米自由貿易協定、２００２年発足を目指すASEAN自由貿易地域などがそれで、WTOによる地域貿易協定は２０００年末で１００を超えている。EU（欧州連合）は労働力や資本の稼動も自由化し、通貨も統一されていることから、自由貿易協定よりも進んだ地域統合といえる。世界貿易機関（WTO）は、すべての加盟国・地域を無差別に扱う「最恵国待遇」を基本原則としているが、その例外として一定の条件下で認めている。日本はWTOなど多角的貿易交渉を重視してきたが、２００２年１月にシンガポールを訪問した小泉首相は初めてシンガポールとの間で２週間の自由貿易協定を結んだ。１００年に一度の世界不況（２００９年）による新たな自由貿易協定の協議が必要だ。
